Money Can buy Happiness at Shanghai Bund and Nanjing Road
After taking in the ancient town of Zhujiajiao it was now time to explore the futuristic city of Shanghai. A quick metro ride from Zhujiajiao to our hotel near People square followed by a much needed rest and it was almost late evening. All we needed was a place we could unwind and take in everything which Shanghai has to offer. What better than the most recognisable symbol and the Pride of Shanghai – The Bund.
A 10 mins walk and we were at the much heard of waterfront – The Bund. Located on the west bank of Huangpu River from the Waibaidu Bridge to Nanpu Bridge it winds 1500 meters (0.93 mile) in length. The architecture along the Bund is the living museum of the colonial era of 1800s. The place was quite crowded as we arrived with the sun setting and the lights from the skyscrapers (Oriental Pearl TV tower, Shanghai World financial centre, Shanghai Tower etc.) across the river started illuminating the skyline.
The River is quite busy with Tourist cruises, cargo ships and barges floating around driving the economy of this cash rich city. The west side of the bund is complete contrast with various buildings of different architectural styles including Gothic, Baroque, Romanesque, Classicism and the Renaissance.
We took a leisurely stroll across the bund watching hoards of newly married couples doing their wedding photo shoot at this iconic place with stunning backgrounds. It was at this place that people seemed relaxed moving about at a slow and leisurely pace for a change as compared to the rest of Shanghai.
After a busy and tiring day at Zhujiajiao and almost half way through our China escapade, we needed an apt place to unwind and what better than a rooftop offering mesmerising views of the Bund and the city skyline. We headed towards the end of the Bund to the Vue Bar, Shanghai at the Grand Hyatt which offers exactly this. The Price is 110 Yuan per person with 2 drinks and a snack included and trust me it’s all worth it. It was a medium sized rooftop bar on the 33rd floor with a whirlpool bath and high tables on its perimeter. Slow jazz playing in the background, perfect pint of Bud, Squid Tempura and mesmerising views of the city beneath you –Who says money can’t buy happiness! Simply spellbound!
I would definitely recommend this place if you are visiting Shanghai anytime. After a perfect night and few drinks, we headed towards Nanjing road which runs perpendicular to the Bund. China’s premier shopping street, the 3.4-mile-long Nanjing Road, is a must-see metropolitan destination attracting thousands of fashion-seeking shoppers from all over the world. For me, Nanjing Road is Shanghai’s version of the London’s Oxford Street or New York’s Times Square. KFC, McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and other famous food chains line both sides of the street. Upscale stores like Tiffany, Mont Blanc, and Dunhill are also present. In addition, Nanjing Road is where you can also find traditional stores and speciality shops selling silk goods, jade, embroidery, wool, and more. A trackless sightseeing train provides a comfortable tour of the pedestrian street.
Dotted with Neon light and filled with sea of people this place is a must visit even if you aren’t a shopping buff. Be careful of your belonging here and also beware of touts selling fake branded goods. We were literally quite tired of Chinese cuisine by now and opted to tuck into some KFC this night before heading back to our hotel.
