After an amazing visit to Memphis and Sakkara (Click here), we made our way to the world famous Giza Pyramids. This was a dream come true having seen it a thousand times on TV and studied about it in school; I was finally here. Visit the Great Giza Pyramids and the Spinx with us.

The Giza Pyramids complex on the Giza plateau houses the Great Pyramids and also the massive sculpture known as the Great Sphinx. The Great Pyramids, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is by far the oldest of the ancient wonders and the only one still in existence.  Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb for Fourth Dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu over a 10 to 20 year period concluding around 2560 BC. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for more than 3,800 years. Some believe that it was built by slaves, but this is not true. One hundred thousand people worked on the great structure for three months of each year, during the Nile’s annual flood when it was impossible to farm the land and most of the population was unemployed. The pharaoh provided good food and clothing for his workers, and was kindly remembered in folk tales for many centuries.

There have been varying scientific and alternative theories about the Great Pyramid’s construction techniques. Most accepted construction hypotheses are based on the idea that it was built by moving huge stones from a quarry, dragging and lifting them into place.

On the East side of the Great Pyramids complex, lays The Great Sphinx – a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the Pharaoh Khafre.  It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre.

Sphinx has been the iconic representation of Egypt along with its pyramids and I must have seen it a thousand times on picture before but nothing prepares you for the sight which behold when you see it face to face. It’s simply amazing and leaves you spellbound.

One thing you need to careful about while in the Great Pyramid complex is the hawkers – a lot of them and they really push you to the limits of frustration and leave you ending up being tired just saying ‘NO’.

We had our hotel just across the Giza pyramids and the sunset over the pyramids from the Hotel roof is something I will cherish forever.

    Giza Pyramids and Sphinx are amazing! Ive been in Egypt before but unfortunately I stayed only in my resort while I was there so I didn’t see much! Hopefully I can go back one day !

    I have been to Egypt a long time ago but would love to return – I even have a very good friend who lives in Cairo to stay with! The pyramids are just amazing aren;t they! The Valley of the Kings is next on my list!!

      There was quite a turmoil when we visited as well but its quite safe and a real friendly place.
